No one told us our daughter/sister was capable of taking her life
... but even if they had we probably wouldn't have listened. Suicide
is for "other" people. And Kara was just a moody teenager who would
outgrow her moods. How wrong we were.
Everyone is at risk of suicide. Kara's moodiness was from her
struggle with depression and anxiety, she was not going to outgrow
the moods, but she could have been helped with proper diagnosis and
treatment. The silence, the stigma, and the shame of suicide
prevents people like Kara who are struggling in her mind to get the
help they need to live. We can not stop suicide unless we are
willing to talk about it and put forth efforts to change the way
society has handled suicide in the past. Take it from us, the loss
of someone to suicide is devastating to the family and the loved
ones. AFSP is the largest not for profit organization dedicated to
the awareness, education and research of suicide prevention. Please
join us to walk in memory of Kara and to raise awareness and funds
for suicide prevention.
